The 2ZR-FE engine, Toyota’s 1.8-liter four-cylinder, began production in 2007 and the manufacturer still plants it in modern Toyota models. It remains a common engine used in the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Prius, and Toyota used it in models from years back like the Toyota Matrix, Pontiac Vibe, and Scion xD
The corolla engine had sequential fuel injection via long-nozzle, 12-hole injectors. The 2ZR-FE engine had pentroof type combustion chambers, and both the cylinder head, and the piston crown had taper squish areas around the circumference of the chambers, to improve intake efficiency and anti-knocking performance.
The 2ZR-FE is considered the updated version of the 1ZZ-FE: cleaner emissions, dual VVT-i, and similar weight and packaging. Similar HP and Torque numbers (2ZR-FE has a few HP and ft/lbs. over the 1ZZ-FE).The 2ZR-FE make peak torque at slighter higher revs vs the 1ZZ-FE (4400 rpm vs 4200 rpm).
The ZR engine is a family of straight-four 16-valve all-aluminum and water, cooled gasoline engines with a die-cast aluminum block, developed by Toyota Motor Corporation, produced from 2007. Engines displace from 1.6 to 2.0 liters. Most engines in this family are equipped with Toyota’s dual VVT-i, technology that optimizes both intake and exhaust valve timing.This engine family is also the first to use Toyota’s Valvematic system, first appearing on the Noah and Voxy in 2007 and then, the European Avensis in 2009.
