In itโs simplest form a tie-rod is a rod that connects the steering lever at one front wheel to the lever on the opposite wheel so that as you steer one wheel to guide the car the other wheel must go the same way. If a tie rod end fails you lose control of the car.
Modern vehicles have much more sophisticated arrangements and the โRODโ may be replaced by several interconnected parts but the intention is the same to โTIEโ the front wheels together so that they act in unison.
