A mass airflow sensor is a device to measure the mass per second flowing through the intake port of the engine.
For best fuel economy and lowest pollution, the engine computer tries to match the amount of fuel molecules. That is being injected to the amount of oxygen molecules coming in for complete combustion.
Since the number of molecules is related not to the mass, the mass flow is much better than volume flow. Whose molecule count would be affected by temperature and atmospheric pressure.
Today if your mass air flow sensor breaks the ECU will detect it, light the check engine light . Without a perfect air-fuel ratio, it will not be running up to spec pollution-wise or fuel economy-wise. It may appear to be running fine but you are polluting, wasting fuel, and will not pass emissions inspections.
